When I was little, I actually had my own experience with bees, and looking back, I honestly can’t believe how reckless we were. My brothers and I used to go around looking for beehives just to mess with them. Of course, our parents had no idea. If they had known what we were doing, we would have been in serious trouble.

We would pile onto our bicycles and head out together, picking up whatever “weapons” we could find along the way. One kid had a stick, another had a rock, and somehow that was enough for us to feel completely prepared for the mission.

I was still pretty young, so I don’t remember everything clearly. I mostly just sat on the back of my brother’s bicycle and watched my older brothers do all the stupid stuff.

If I had known how badly a bee sting could hurt, there is no way I would have gone along with it. But back then, I had no idea what could happen. I was just a curious, energetic kid who wanted to see what my brothers were up to.

So I sat there on the back of the bicycle, waiting to see what would happen. My brothers started throwing sticks and rocks at the hive, one after another. Before I even had time to see what happened, my brother suddenly turned the bicycle around and started riding away as fast as he could.

Then came all the yelling from behind us. Some of my brothers sounded excited, some sounded terrified, and I’m pretty sure I was screaming too, even though I had absolutely no idea whether there were actually bees chasing us or not.

Somehow, we all made it home safely.

Looking back, it really was a miracle that none of us got hurt. And even now, just thinking about that bicycle ride still makes my heart beat a little faster. Haha.

These days, the kids in my family don’t really get to have experiences like that. Most of the insects they know come from TV, phones, or the occasional little bug they find around the house.

So in a strange way, I’m actually a little grateful that my childhood came with some of those wild experiences. Of course, that doesn’t mean I would ever encourage the kids in my family to copy the reckless things I did back then!

Instead of looking for a real bee and getting close enough to risk being stung, why not make one of your own?

This craft lets you recreate a little bee and its honeycomb in a much cuter and safer way.
